Banjul<\/strong> \u2013 During the 81st session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights<\/strong>, held in Banjul, Gambia<\/strong>, the Algerian delegation<\/strong> emphasized that the country has entered a new phase of development<\/strong> following the re-election of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune<\/strong>. This phase is characterized by “continuing to build the rule of law and meeting the aspirations of the Algerian people”<\/strong>, with the president committed to pursuing political reforms<\/strong> through a comprehensive review of key legislations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These legislative reforms include amendments to the Political Parties Law<\/strong>, Associations Law<\/strong>, and the Municipal and Provincial Codes<\/strong>. The reforms aim to strengthen political, union, and media freedoms<\/strong>, uphold accountability<\/strong>, and separate politics from financial interests<\/strong> while maintaining the fundamental principles of national identity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Algerian delegation stressed that these reforms reflect the country\u2019s commitment to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights<\/strong>. One example is the adoption of a draft decree<\/strong> establishing the rules for the National Observatory for the Prevention of Discrimination and Hate Speech<\/strong>, which operates under the supervision of the President of the Republic<\/strong>. This observatory serves as a mechanism for reporting discriminatory acts to judicial authorities<\/strong> and conducting periodic evaluations<\/strong> on efforts to prevent hate speech. Additionally, Algeria has implemented several programs and policies<\/strong> aimed at promoting the rights of women, children, and the elderly<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

International Solidarity and Human Rights Issues<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

On the international level, the Algerian delegation urged the African Commission<\/strong> to present a resolution<\/strong> reaffirming Africa\u2019s solidarity with the Palestinian people<\/strong> and condemning the human rights violations<\/strong> committed by the Israeli occupation<\/strong> in the occupied Palestinian territories<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The delegation also reaffirmed Algeria\u2019s unwavering support for the right of the Sahrawi people<\/strong> to self-determination<\/strong> and called for an end to the illegal occupation<\/strong> of their lands and the exploitation of their resources<\/strong>. The delegation cited a recent European Court of Justice ruling<\/strong> that declared the trade agreements between the European Commission and the occupying forces<\/strong> unlawful due to the violation of the Sahrawi people\u2019s rights<\/strong> without their consent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this context, the Algerian delegation reiterated its call for the African Commission<\/strong> to comply with the decisions of the Executive Council of the African Union<\/strong>, which demand that the commission undertake a fact-finding mission<\/strong> on human rights violations in occupied Western Sahara<\/strong>. The delegation urged the commission to fulfill its mandate in accordance with the provisions of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
