Geneva<\/strong> \u2013 Rachid Beladhane<\/strong>, Algeria\u2019s Permanent Representative to the United Nations<\/strong> and international organizations in Geneva, declared on Friday, October 18, 2024<\/strong>, that Algeria unequivocally rejects Morocco’s blackmail tactics<\/strong> against the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)<\/strong> and other humanitarian agencies. He criticized Morocco\u2019s baseless allegations<\/strong>, accusing Rabat of obstructing the work of the UNHCR while targeting Algeria with unfounded accusations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During a vote on the UNHCR’s 2025 budget<\/strong>, Beladhane emphasized:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI would like to remind this esteemed assembly that, as usual, Morocco persists in using baseless and unfounded arguments to hinder the work of the UNHCR, particularly by falsely accusing my country, which is committed to supporting international law and hosting refugees fleeing persecution and death.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Beladhane stressed that Algeria categorically rejects Morocco\u2019s blackmail<\/strong> directed not only at the UNHCR<\/strong> but also at other humanitarian organizations, including the World Food Program (WFP)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Obstruction of Humanitarian Assistance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Beladhane criticized Morocco\u2019s attempt to politicize humanitarian aid<\/strong> and asked:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy does Morocco, which claims sovereignty over Western Sahara and its people, continue to stifle these displaced populations, who found refuge in Algeria, by depriving them of vital assistance from the UNHCR and other humanitarian agencies?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

He warned that Morocco\u2019s obstructive actions threaten the operations of the UNHCR<\/strong>, an institution that provides critical services to 123 million refugees and displaced persons<\/strong> worldwide, most of whom are in Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Algeria\u2019s Continued Support for the UNHCR<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Beladhane reiterated Algeria\u2019s confidence in the UNHCR<\/strong>, affirming that all documents and actions<\/strong> by the agency align with international law<\/strong>. Algeria has consistently supported the UNHCR\u2019s budget proposals<\/strong> over the years and will continue to do so, as part of its commitment to alleviating the suffering of millions of refugees and displaced people worldwide<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He further emphasized that Algeria will ensure that the language used by the UN aligns with the UN\u2019s standards<\/strong> and warned against any political manipulation<\/strong> of the humanitarian work carried out by the UNHCR:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAlgeria will not accept any modifications aimed at the arbitrary politicization of the purely humanitarian mission of the UNHCR.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Support for Western Sahara and Sahrawi Refugees<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

During the 75th Executive Committee session<\/strong> of the UNHCR<\/strong>, held in Geneva from October 14 to 18, 2024<\/strong>, Beladhane reiterated Algeria\u2019s call for humanitarian agencies and donors<\/strong> to contribute to the support plan for 173,600 Sahrawi refugees in need<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beladhane also highlighted the unlawful exploitation of Western Sahara\u2019s resources<\/strong> by Moroccan authorities, reaffirming Algeria\u2019s unwavering support for the Sahrawi people\u2019s right to self-determination<\/strong>. He reminded the session of a recent European Court of Justice ruling<\/strong>, which declared that trade agreements between the European Commission<\/strong> and Morocco violated international law<\/strong> by failing to secure the consent of the Sahrawi people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
