{"id":9006,"date":"2024-10-30T11:30:27","date_gmt":"2024-10-30T10:30:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dzwatch.dz\/?p=9006"},"modified":"2024-10-30T11:30:30","modified_gmt":"2024-10-30T10:30:30","slug":"algerian-ambassador-calls-for-joint-international-action-to-launch-a-genuine-peace-process-in-the-middle-east","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dzwatch.dz\/?p=9006","title":{"rendered":"Algerian Ambassador Calls for Joint International Action to Launch a Genuine Peace Process in the Middle East"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>New York (UN)<\/strong> \u2013 Algeria&#8217;s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, <strong>Ambassador Ammar Benjamaa<\/strong>, called on the international community on Tuesday to <strong>&#8220;work together&#8221;<\/strong> to initiate a <strong>&#8220;genuine peace process&#8221;<\/strong> that would bring an end to the occupation of Arab lands, which he described as the <strong>&#8220;prerequisite for achieving a just and lasting peace&#8221;<\/strong> in the Middle East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking during a <strong>UN Security Council meeting on the situation in the Middle East<\/strong>, particularly in Palestine, Ambassador Benjamaa stressed:<br><em>&#8220;The suffering of the Palestinian people is not just a humanitarian crisis but a deeply-rooted political issue stemming from decades of occupation and repression dating back to the Nakba.&#8221;<\/em> He added, <em>&#8220;The core issue in the Middle East is the occupation.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Call for an Unconditional Ceasefire<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ambassador Benjamaa emphasized that <strong>lasting peace in the Middle East cannot be achieved without addressing this fundamental issue<\/strong>. He urged members of the Security Council to <strong>&#8220;work together to impose an immediate and unconditional ceasefire&#8221;<\/strong> in Gaza and Lebanon and to launch a peace process aimed at <strong>ending the occupation of all Arab territories<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also condemned the <strong>&#8220;growing violence&#8221;<\/strong> Palestinians have faced for more than a year, pointing out that <strong>the international community&#8217;s failure to defend Palestinian rights has exacerbated the crisis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Threats to Regional and Global Stability<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Algerian envoy warned that the <strong>&#8220;brutal Zionist aggression is expanding by the day, now encompassing Lebanon, Syria, and other areas,&#8221;<\/strong> posing a <strong>serious threat to regional stability and global peace and security<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He lamented the <strong>collapse of the post-World War II international framework<\/strong>, noting that the current system has failed to hold the occupying force accountable:<br><em>&#8220;We are witnessing the triumph of force over justice in today\u2019s world.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gaza: A Humanitarian Catastrophe<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ambassador Benjamaa described the situation in <strong>northern Gaza<\/strong> as <strong>&#8220;extremely catastrophic,&#8221;<\/strong> noting that the destruction of Gaza is not driven by military objectives but is part of a deliberate policy to <strong>forcibly displace Palestinians from their homes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also warned that <strong>Gaza\u2019s healthcare system is on the brink of collapse<\/strong>, while conditions in southern Gaza <strong>&#8220;are hardly any better.&#8221;<\/strong> The Algerian diplomat stressed that the <strong>blockade imposed by the occupier has plunged civilians, especially children, into starvation<\/strong> by denying them access to essential food supplies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this context, he highlighted that <strong>over 200,000 humanitarian aid trucks<\/strong> were prevented from entering Gaza in the past year, exposing <strong>&#8220;the true face of the Zionist occupation&#8221;<\/strong> and its <strong>&#8220;inhumane treatment&#8221;<\/strong> of Palestinians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Condemnation of Actions Against UNRWA<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ambassador Benjamaa also strongly condemned the <strong>Israeli regime\u2019s obstruction of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA)<\/strong>, reminding the international community that the agency operates <strong>under a mandate from the UN General Assembly<\/strong>.<br><em>&#8220;This justifies our collective defense and support for UNRWA,&#8221;<\/em> he stated, emphasizing the importance of the agency for <strong>thousands of Palestinian refugees<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He further condemned the <strong>ongoing attacks on UNRWA personnel<\/strong>, revealing that <strong>231 individuals<\/strong> have been killed so far and that <strong>190 UNRWA facilities<\/strong> have been targeted in airstrikes.<br><em>&#8220;There is no substitute for UNRWA,&#8221;<\/em> he insisted, adding, <em>&#8220;The agency must continue to serve as a lifeline for Palestinian refugees until a fair political solution is reached with the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Attacks on Freedom of Expression and Journalists<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ambassador Benjamaa also decried the <strong>violation of freedom of expression<\/strong> in the occupied Palestinian territories, condemning the <strong>&#8220;deafening silence&#8221;<\/strong> of the international community regarding these flagrant abuses. He questioned, <em>&#8220;Where are the voices of those who once championed freedom of expression?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He accused the Israeli occupation of <strong>attempting to suppress the truth<\/strong>, stressing that <strong>&#8220;even if they try to erase it, the truth cannot be hidden.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Algerian diplomat revealed that the occupation has <strong>barred foreign journalists from entering Gaza for over a year<\/strong>, noting that <strong>Palestinian journalists remaining in northern Gaza are now direct targets<\/strong> of the Israeli military.
