The agreement outlines a 10-year afforestation project aimed at planting over <strong>423 million seedlings<\/strong> nationwide to establish certified natural &#8220;carbon sinks&#8221; as part of the public company\u2019s climate strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agreement was signed by <strong>Abdelkarim Ouamar<\/strong>, Sonatrach&#8217;s Central Director of Health, Safety, and Environment, and <strong>Najma Rahmani<\/strong>, Inspector General of the General Directorate of Forestry. The ceremony was attended by Sonatrach CEO <strong>Rachid Hachichi<\/strong>, Tipaza Governor <strong>Ali Moulay<\/strong>, and key officials from the Ministries of Energy, Agriculture, and Environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Project Details<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The initiative seeks to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions by balancing emissions with absorption capacity through large-scale afforestation programs, thus generating carbon credits.<br>Key features of the project include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Duration:<\/strong> 10 years.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Scope:<\/strong> Approximately 520,000 hectares of forested land across <a class=\"dzsl-auto-link dzsl-internal\" data-dzsl=\"internal\" href=\"https:\/\/dzwatch.dz\/?cat=1\">Algeria<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tree Planting Goals:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>300 million trees<\/strong> for afforestation and reforestation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>120 million trees<\/strong> for landscape rehabilitation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>3 million trees<\/strong> for agroforestry development.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The estimated total cost of the project is <strong>150 billion Algerian dinars<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pilot Phase<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A two-year pilot phase will be implemented to evaluate feasibility and enable stakeholders to develop expertise in carbon credit registration and generation mechanisms. This initial stage will involve planting approximately <strong>41.3 million seedlings<\/strong>, covering an area of <strong>43,000 hectares<\/strong> <a class=\"dzsl-auto-link dzsl-internal\" data-dzsl=\"internal\" href=\"https:\/\/dzwatch.dz\/?p=65012\">across several<\/a> provinces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Strategic Significance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This large-scale afforestation project aligns with Algeria\u2019s efforts to combat climate change and bolster <a class=\"dzsl-auto-link dzsl-external\" data-dzsl=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.undp.org\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">sustainable development<\/a>.
