Algeria Bolsters Role as Pivotal Actor in African Economic Integration
Algeria continues to solidify its role as a pivotal actor in African economic integration, driven by a vision focused on bolstering connectivity, developing crucial infrastructure, and fostering trade across the continent. This comprehensive strategy, aimed at unlocking broader prospects for continental economic sovereignty, was recently highlighted in an Algerian television documentary titled “Algeria – Africa.. Bonds of the Future.” The documentary underscored the significance of robust infrastructure in advancing African integration, detailing Algeria's multi-faceted approach through land, sea, air, and digital connectivity projects, all designed to establish new economic corridors and optimize resource utilization.
In the realm of transport, Algeria's commitment to the “African solutions for African problems” doctrine is central to its strategy, which prioritizes the development of logistical and transport infrastructure as a key enabler for the continent's vast potential. Algeria has been a pioneering force behind the Trans-Saharan Road project, which originated from the aspirations of Sahelian heads of state to stimulate development through enhanced trade and enable underserved regions to participate in the continent's economic growth. This initiative has evolved beyond merely constructing a road to creating an economic corridor that generates activities and economic movement along its path. Algeria is further contributing to its completion in Chad by undertaking two sections spanning 76 and 85 kilometers, aimed at accelerating the project’s finalization. Complementing land routes, maritime transport is viewed as an essential link for continental connectivity, particularly for landlocked African nations seeking access to global markets. Leveraging its strategic coastline, Algeria is developing a logistical network to link its ports with highways and railways. This initiative aims to provide landlocked African nations, particularly those in the Sahel, with access to global markets, potentially reducing transport times by approximately 12 days and costs by around 30 percent. Parallel efforts include a program to modernize Algeria's shipping fleet and port infrastructure, alongside enhancing port governance through a national port authority and digitizing procedures.
Complementing these efforts, Algeria is expanding its air transport network through Air Algerie, which is reinforcing its presence in West Africa with aspirations to broaden its long-haul routes and strengthen its position among major African airlines, thereby supporting economic, institutional, and cultural exchange. Furthermore, Algeria is spearheading the construction of trans-Saharan digital bridges, integral to the continent's economic integration through data flow. A cornerstone of this vision is the Trans-Saharan Optical Fiber Link, an ambitious project connecting Algeria with Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, and Chad, centered on a main axis linking Algeria to Nigeria. This high-speed regional digital telecommunications infrastructure is poised to enhance geographic connectivity across the Sahel and drive genuine digital transformation, supported by Algeria's international connectivity capabilities, including plans for two new submarine cables by 2028 and 2029, alongside data center projects.
