Algerian Gas Dominates Spanish Market with 41.7% Share, Solidifying Key Energy Supplier Role
Algeria has significantly reinforced its position as a primary natural gas supplier to Spain, capturing 41.7% of total Spanish market imports in July 2026. This performance, which saw Algeria inject approximately 10,707 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of gas into Spain during that month alone, underscores the growing influence of Algerian gas within the European energy market. Data from the Spanish company Enagás, cited by EL ESPAÑOL's economic platform Invertia, shows Algeria notably outpaced other suppliers, with Nigeria ranking second at 15.4%, followed by the United States at 11.6%, and Russia at 8.1%.
Beyond the July figures, Algeria has solidified its status as Spain's leading natural gas provider throughout the first seven months of 2026. Between January and July, Algerian gas supplies to Spain reached 74,336 GWh, accounting for 34.8% of the total gas entering the Spanish market during this period. This placed Algeria well ahead of the United States, which supplied 58,763 GWh (27.3%), and Russia, with 39,443 GWh (18.3%), demonstrating Algeria's substantial lead over its main competitors despite a diversified supply landscape.
Algeria's robust position is further enhanced by its diverse supply channels to Spain, primarily through the Medgaz pipeline, which directly connects the two countries, complemented by liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments via carriers. This multi-route infrastructure, combined with Algeria's geographical proximity, allows for a strong and stable presence in the Spanish market. These increased Algerian supplies coincided with a rise in Spanish gas demand, which grew by 8.4% in July to 27,507 GWh, driven largely by a 31.5% year-on-year increase in gas consumption for electricity generation in combined cycle plants.
Such developments highlight Algeria's strategic significance in the broader European energy security context, especially as European nations seek to diversify and secure their energy sources. Algeria, possessing substantial gas reserves and well-developed production, transportation, and export capabilities, benefits from an existing infrastructure network that directly links it to European markets. These latest figures cement Algeria's role as a major gas power in the Mediterranean region and a crucial energy supplier for the European market.
