Algiers Airport Rises to Top 5 African Hubs Amidst Strong Air Algérie Growth
Algiers International Airport has achieved a notable distinction, entering the top five African airports in terms of programmed capacity, according to the latest report from the Official Airline Guide (OAG) for August 2026. This significant advancement is largely attributed to the robust expansion of the national carrier, Air Algérie, and its overarching strategic objective to transform Algiers into a pivotal regional aviation hub, connecting Africa with global destinations.
Air Algérie itself demonstrates substantial growth, ranking fifth among African airlines operating in August 2026, with 825,900 programmed seats. The national flag carrier recorded the highest year-on-year growth among the top ten African airlines, marking an impressive 16.8% increase, which translates to 119,000 additional seats compared to August 2025. This expansion is a direct result of the company's comprehensive development plan, which includes strengthening its fleet and extending its international network.
The Houari-Boumediene Airport specifically programmed a total of 680,000 seats for August 2026, reflecting a 7.2% increase over the same month in the previous year. This substantial capacity places Algiers airport ahead of several other African airport platforms, both in terms of programmed seats and growth, including Nairobi, Cape Town, and Tunis. Furthermore, Algiers airport concentrates over half of the total 1.2 million programmed seats across all Algerian airports for the month, underscoring its central role in the nation's aviation strategy and regional aspirations.
