Algeria Outlines Key Diplomatic Priorities for Palestinian Cause and Jerusalem
Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf affirmed that the Palestinian cause, especially regarding Jerusalem, is navigating a critical and pivotal phase. Speaking at a ministerial meeting in Amman, Jordan, focused on supporting Jerusalem and its holy sites, Minister Attaf conveyed Algeria's conviction that safeguarding Jerusalem necessitates a concentrated collective effort centered on three interrelated and complementary priorities.
The first priority articulated by the Foreign Minister is to intensify political and diplomatic action. This effort is designed to counter all unilateral measures that seek to alter Jerusalem's historical character, legal status, and demographic composition. Concurrently, Algeria advocates for continued efforts to prevent the transfer of diplomatic missions to the holy city, while consistently affirming Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Palestine.
The second priority outlined by Minister Attaf focuses on preserving the existing historical and legal status of Islamic and Christian holy sites. This includes supporting the Hashemite custodianship over these sacred places, recognizing it as a fundamental element in their protection, the preservation of their identity, and ensuring freedom of worship within them. These measures are seen as crucial for maintaining the integrity and spiritual significance of the sites.
Finally, the third priority is dedicated to bolstering the resilience of Jerusalem's inhabitants. This involves providing support to Palestinian institutions within Jerusalem, enabling them to continue their national mission. Such support is intended to contribute to the preservation of the Palestinian presence in the city and to safeguard its cultural and religious identity. Minister Attaf underscored that the current phase of the Palestinian cause represents a genuine test of the collective Arab and Islamic capacity to elevate joint action to meet the magnitude of challenges and aggressions faced by Jerusalem and, by extension, the Palestinian national project.
