Algeria’s BRICS New Development Bank Position Strengthened by Iran’s Membership Bid

Iran has announced its intention to join the BRICS New Development Bank (NDB) in the near future, according to Abdolnaser Hemmati, Governor of the Central Bank of Iran. Speaking at a meeting of BRICS finance ministers and central bank governors in India on August 11, Mr. Hemmati highlighted the NDB as a crucial outcome of cooperation among BRICS member states. This development could contribute to strengthening financial collaboration among member nations and potentially foster de-dollarized trade.

This expansion of the NDB's membership further reinforces Algeria's strategic engagement with the institution, as Algeria officially became a member of the BRICS New Development Bank earlier. Established in 2015 by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, the NDB is tasked with supporting infrastructure and sustainable development projects within BRICS countries and other developing economies. Iran's impending membership signifies a growing collaborative financial framework.
