Algeria and Kenya Agree on Joint Health Cooperation Program

Algeria's Health Minister, Professor Mohamed Seddik Aït Messoudène, recently hosted the Kenyan Ambassador to Algeria, Kaloma Timothy Masharo, at the Ministry's headquarters. The discussion centered on enhancing and expanding bilateral cooperation in the health sector, with central administration officials from Algeria also in attendance. This high-level meeting underscores Algeria's proactive engagement in fostering international partnerships, particularly within the African continent, to advance healthcare initiatives.

During the meeting, Minister Aït Messoudène presented an overview of Algeria's health system, highlighting its foundational principles, which include free treatment, the promotion of prevention as a core pillar, and the development of local health services to ensure accessibility for citizens. He also detailed the crucial roles of the Central Pharmacy of Hospitals in supplying medicines and medical necessities across various health structures, and the Pasteur Institute, recognized as a reference institution at the African level. Discussions further explored key areas such as nuclear medicine, the application of artificial intelligence in healthcare, the digitization of services, and the contractualization system for improving health system performance.

Ambassador Masharo conveyed Kenya's strong interest in strengthening cooperation with Algeria, specifically expressing a desire to benefit from Algeria's expertise and experiences in the field of oncology. The productive discussions concluded with an agreement to organize a future virtual meeting. This upcoming session will bring together specialized departments from both countries to develop a joint work program and identify priority areas for implementing practical and tangible projects that will benefit the health systems of both Algeria and Kenya.
