Algiers International Airport Ascends to Top 5 African Air Hubs
Algiers International Airport has solidified its growing continental influence, officially entering the top five African air hubs in terms of seat capacity. This notable ascent is largely propelled by the ambitious expansion initiatives undertaken by Air Algérie, positioning the airport as a key player in the reshaping of air transport dynamics across Africa.
According to the latest report from OAG (Official Airline Guide) for August 2026, Algiers International Airport registered a capacity of 680,000 seats, marking a 7.2% increase year-on-year. Contributing significantly to this growth, Air Algérie itself is noted for its impressive performance, securing the 5th spot among continental carriers with 825,900 programmed seats. The national flag carrier also recorded the strongest annual growth within Africa's top 10, demonstrating a substantial 16.8% increase, which translates to 119,000 additional seats compared to August 2025.
The strategic development of Air Algérie has acted as a vital catalyst for the Algiers airport platform, aligning with the company's plan to expand its fleet, broaden its international network, and establish Algiers as a strategic hub connecting the African continent globally. This success is further evidenced by the airport's overwhelming dominance in the national market, capturing over half of the 1.2 million seats programmed across Algeria in August. Algiers also surpasses several other major African hubs, including Nairobi, Cape Town, and Tunis, in both seat volume and growth trajectory, underscoring its pivotal and expanding role in regional and international aviation.
