Blida Gendarmerie Detains Content Creator for Hate Speech

Algerian National Gendarmerie forces in Blida province arrested a content creator following the publication of a video across social media platforms. The individual was detained on grounds of disseminating discriminatory discourse and inciting hatred, an action viewed by authorities as a direct threat to public tranquility and security.

The Gendarmerie services clarified that the arrest came after the circulation of a video where the individual used offensive language and phrases targeting a specific segment of society, identified as "bearded men," within a discussion concerning the clothing worn by minors. Following investigations initiated by the Search and Investigation Service in Blida, the suspect's identity and residence were determined, leading to their apprehension. The content creator is set to be presented before the Public Prosecutor at Boufarik Court on charges of publishing hate speech and harming public security and order.

This measure underscores the Algerian authorities' reinforced efforts to tighten oversight on digital content and rigorously apply laws combating information technology crimes and hate speech. Such legal enforcement has expanded in recent years, adapting to the swift evolution of social media platforms to ensure public order and safety in the digital sphere. This follows a similar incident a week prior where security authorities arrested an influencer for describing an 8-year-old girl with derogatory terms, also leading to imprisonment on hate speech charges, further reflecting the country's comprehensive approach to safeguarding its online environment.
