African Union Hails Algeria’s Youth Peace and Security Framework

The African Union (AU) has commended Algeria's national youth strategy, recognizing its importance for advancing peace and security across the region. Hasna Tamam, the AU Youth for Peace Ambassador for North Africa, praised Algeria's adoption of the strategy, deeming it a prominent achievement in implementing the Youth, Peace, and Security agenda. This commendation was made during the opening of the Fifth Continental Dialogue on Youth, Peace, and Security, held in Bujumbura, Burundi, from August 10 to 12.

The dialogue saw the participation of Burundi's President Evariste Ndayishimiye, who attended in his capacity as the Chairperson of the African Union and the AU Champion for Youth, Peace, and Security. Ambassador Tamam highlighted that Algeria is among several North African nations, including Egypt, Libya, and Mauritania, that have adopted national youth strategies. These frameworks are seen as crucial for integrating peace and security dimensions into national policies targeting youth.

Further demonstrating its commitment, Algeria recently hosted the third edition of the Youth Diplomacy Forum in Oran on February 7. This event, organized by the Supreme Youth Council under the patronage of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, served as a regional platform designed to place youth at the forefront of discussions concerning peace, security, and development. The ongoing Continental Dialogue aims to evaluate progress on youth and women's peace and security agendas, foster intergenerational exchange, and review security developments across Africa, with a particular focus on risks related to climate and water.
