Kafra Sud-Est 1 Project Begins in Niger, Targeting 260 Million Barrels
ENAFOR, a subsidiary of Algeria's national oil company Sonatrach, has officially launched drilling operations for the Kafra Sud-Est 1 oil project in Niger. Situated in the Agadez region, approximately 85 kilometers from the Algerian border, the project aims to explore a block estimated to contain over 260 million barrels of reserves. This significant undertaking involves drilling to a depth of 3,900 meters, marking a new phase in the energy cooperation between Niger and Algeria.
The Kafra block, spanning 23,737 square kilometers, has been a focus for the Algerian group for over two decades, with Sonatrach obtaining a prospection permit in 2005, which led to an initial discovery of hydrocarbons by the KFR-1 well. A production sharing contract between Sonatrach's subsidiary Sipex and Nigerien authorities was established in 2015 and renewed in 2022. The current drilling operation by ENAFOR represents a more profound industrial engagement, designed to gather precise geological data crucial for evaluating commercial viability and confirming the conditions for potential future production.
Beyond the technical exploration, the Kafra Sud-Est 1 project is designed to facilitate the transfer of essential know-how and expertise to Nigerien professionals. This initiative focuses on training local cadres and workers in the hydrocarbon sector, strengthening Niger's human capital and its capacity to manage its natural resources. Such cooperation underscores Sonatrach's geographical and technical advantages, leveraging its extensive experience in Sahara oil operations and its proximity to similar exploration zones on the Algerian side.
The project holds significant diplomatic importance, deepening the bilateral relations between Niamey and Algiers as both nations seek to enhance their economic ties. For Niger, it offers the prospect of increasing hydrocarbon revenues and diversifying production, although the economic timeline depends on the drilling results and subsequent development phases. Kafra Sud-Est 1 therefore stands as a strategic option for long-term growth, transforming geological potential into industrial capability and sustainable revenue streams for the host nation.
