NWA 13441 Meteorite Offers New Insights into Martian Past

A Martian meteorite designated Northwest Africa (NWA) 13441, discovered in Algeria in 2019, has revealed a previously unknown geological history of the Red Planet. Scientists recently confirmed the meteorite's age at 1.27 billion years. This finding helps to bridge a significant gap in Mars' geological timeline, specifically a period ranging from 600 million to 2.4 billion years ago, for which no magmatic shergottite meteorites, the most common type of Martian fragments, were previously known.

The characteristics of NWA 13441 have proven entirely unexpected for researchers. Ethan Baxter, a professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Boston College and one of the study's authors, noted that no other Martian meteorite of its kind possesses an age of 1.27 billion years. The cosmic stone's composition is particularly surprising, as it is a shergottite that also contains isotopes of the rare-earth metal neodymium, typically found in chondrites—a different type of meteorite composed of unmolten rocks common during the solar system's formation 4.56 billion years ago.

This unique mixed composition suggests that the deeper layers of Mars have remained relatively undisturbed since the planet's formation. Further analysis of the chondritic content and its isotope composition is helping to establish new boundaries for processes that occurred in the earliest solar system during the formation of Mars. Scientists propose that the meteorite may originate from a previously unexplored deposit on the Red Planet, situated between what are known as 'enriched and depleted shergottite sources'.

Researchers anticipate that continued study of NWA 13441 will provide further revelations regarding magmatic and volcanic activity on Mars, contributing significantly to humanity's understanding of the planet's internal dynamics and evolutionary past.
