Bilateral Trade Between Tunisia, Algeria Jumps to $2.76 Billion
Trade exchanges between Tunisia and Algeria have seen a substantial increase of 166% over the past five years, reaching approximately $2.76 billion. This significant growth was reported by the representative office of the Tunisian Export Promotion Center in Algeria, coinciding with ongoing efforts to strengthen partnerships between businesses in both countries. The data was highlighted during an economic gathering that convened businessmen and representatives from Tunisian and Algerian professional organizations.
This recent economic meeting was part of a business delegation organized by "Connect International" in collaboration with the Algerian Confederation of Citizen Employers, held from September 22 to 24 in Algiers and Blida. The delegation included Tunisian companies specializing in diverse sectors such as industry, food industries, energy, building materials, services, and the digital economy, with support from the Tunisian Embassy in Algeria and the Export Promotion Center. Algeria currently stands as the seventh-largest global market for Tunisian exports and the fourth-largest supplier to Tunisia, demonstrating the depth of their economic ties.
The flourishing trade relationship benefits from existing bilateral agreements, including customs reductions of up to 40% under a preferential trade agreement and exemptions within the Greater Arab Free Trade Area. The recent business mission actively explored new avenues for cooperation across various sectors, including renewable energy, photovoltaic solutions, food industries, and digital services. Discussions also focused on developing joint production chains, leveraging shared land borders, and enhancing logistical coordination to collectively target and expand presence in broader African markets, particularly through the Trans-Saharan Road. Proposals aimed at further boosting collaboration included facilitating the import of Tunisian-made automotive components and spare parts, in exchange for easier access for Algerian assembled vehicles into the Tunisian market.
