National Port System to Gain 60 Billion Dinar Enhancement

The Serport Group has initiated a significant 60 billion dinar investment program dedicated to the modernization and equipment of Algerian ports during the 2025-2026 period. This extensive financial commitment aims to elevate port profitability and substantially decrease vessel processing times, underscoring a strategic national focus on enhancing maritime infrastructure. The program aligns with a broader strategy encompassing the modernization and extension of port facilities, digitalization of procedures, renewal of equipment, and improved coordination among logistical stakeholders.

Several key port extension projects are underway as part of this initiative. At Arzew Port, the extension of quay no. 5 has reached 61% completion across a 55-hectare area, with reception anticipated in 2027. Annaba Port's primary project involves constructing a 1,600-meter-long, 16-meter-deep metal quay, designed to process up to 10 million tons of phosphate annually. This project, currently 55% complete and expected by March 2027, will accommodate vessels between 80,000 and 90,000 tons, further boosting export capacities and is projected to create 5,000 to 10,000 direct and indirect jobs.

Technical studies have been finalized for Djen Djen Port, paving the way for a new 20-meter-deep basin and an additional 122 hectares of storage space. These enhancements are set to enable the port to handle new-generation vessels with capacities up to 24,000 containers, solidifying its role as a regional logistical hub for transshipment operations to both national and African ports. Concurrently, Algiers Port is undergoing extensive rehabilitation, with work on quays 18, 19, and 21 already completed at a cost of 6 billion dinars, and quay no. 8 also finished. Rehabilitation of quay no. 17 is approximately 50% complete, while studies for redeveloping quays 17, 22, 23, 24, and 25 are progressing.

Furthermore, the national port network is undergoing a strategic reorganization, attributing specialized roles to each port based on its geographical position, potential, and economic environment to optimize activity distribution and improve profitability. Mostaganem Port has notably been designated for public enterprise imports and exports, a directive from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. This port recently benefited from a modern container storage platform capable of holding 10,000 units, with an additional five-hectare storage area under development and studies ongoing for a third basin to accommodate larger vessels.
