Food Sovereignty Drives Algerian Land Mapping Initiative

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development and Fisheries, Sid Ali Khaldi, has announced the initiation of a comprehensive inventory of unexploited agricultural lands. This measure aims to integrate these lands into the national agricultural data system, with a core objective of expanding cultivated areas to bolster national food sovereignty. The move aligns with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune's directives, which prioritize food security as a crucial national objective and a fundamental pillar of Algeria's sovereignty.

Minister Khaldi highlighted the significant volume of fallow agricultural areas each year as an "unacceptable" situation. The inventory will proceed with a gradual and fair approach, coupled with encouragement and support for investors, particularly those operating in the southern regions of the country. This effort forms part of a broader strategy for the 2026-2027 agricultural season, which also emphasizes supporting farmers through guidance, technical assistance, and securing necessary provisions like seeds, fertilizers, and machinery to enhance production quality and yield.

Algeria possesses the necessary capabilities to meet the challenge of food security, including extensive fertile lands, agricultural expertise, and robust administrative and technical supervision. The directives issued during recent Council of Ministers meetings provide a clear roadmap for the agricultural sector to achieve this strategic vision, reinforcing the nation's capacity for self-sufficiency and economic resilience.
