TasteAtlas Crowns Makrout El Louz World’s Top Almond Pastry

The rich culinary heritage of Algeria has received significant international acclaim, with three traditional Algerian pastries featuring in TasteAtlas's latest global top 20 ranking. Leading this recognition, Makrout El Louz was distinguished as the best almond specialty worldwide, surpassing numerous international contenders. This prestigious ranking by the acclaimed culinary guide, TasteAtlas, relies on public ratings, utilizing a stringent verification system to ensure impartiality by excluding uncertified votes from bots and community campaigns.
Makrout El Louz, a traditional Algerian cake crafted without flour from almonds, sugar, eggs, and a hint of orange blossom water, secured the global number one position for almond specialties. These lightly baked delights are generously coated in powdered sugar. Another Algerian classic, Kalb El Louz, achieved a notable 9th place in the global top 10, earning an impressive score of 4.0/5. This semolina and ground almond cake, often enjoyed during Ramadan, is delicately flavored with cinnamon, vanilla, cardamom, and orange blossom water, and is soaked in syrup immediately after baking. It is also known regionally as "chamia" in western Algeria and "h'rissa" in eastern Algeria.
Furthermore, the traditional Mkhabez also made its mark, ranking 12th globally with an excellent score of 4.0/5. This confection, typically made from nuts, primarily almonds, combined with sugar and eggs, requires precise finishing, with the baked pastry delicately glazed and adorned with royal icing. The strong performance of these traditional Algerian pastries in a competitive international culinary landscape highlights the country's esteemed gastronomic tradition, outranking well-known classics from Italian, Greek, Turkish, and Middle Eastern cuisines.
