Council of Nation President Meets Indonesian Envoy
Azzouz Nasseri, President of Algeria's Council of the Nation, recently held discussions with Yusran Baharudin Ambar, the Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia. The meeting aimed at exploring avenues for strengthened bilateral relations, emphasizing the importance of transforming their shared historical legacy into broader partnerships across political, economic, and parliamentary domains. Both sides highlighted the symbolic significance of the Bandung Conference in their collective memory, viewing this heritage as a foundation for a renewed partnership that aligns with the aspirations of their respective populations.
During the engagement, President Nasseri underscored the necessity of leveraging the potential available to both nations to elevate economic cooperation to the level of their strong political relations. He invited Indonesian institutions to explore investment and partnership opportunities in Algeria, specifically citing sectors such as energy, mining, agriculture, fisheries, and infrastructure. Nasseri also highlighted Algeria's ongoing reforms designed to enhance the investment climate and diversify the national economy, thereby creating new prospects for foreign investors. In response, the Indonesian Ambassador expressed his commitment to attracting Indonesian investors to the Algerian market and expanding cooperation into areas like higher education and culture.
The discussions also covered political and parliamentary cooperation, reaffirming Algeria's independent and balanced foreign policy, which is based on respect for state sovereignty, non-interference in internal affairs, adherence to international legitimacy, and a preference for dialogue and peaceful resolutions. The high level of consultation and coordination between Algeria and Indonesia in international forums was acknowledged, with Algeria's accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) noted as opening new horizons for deeper engagement with Indonesia and other regional countries. Both parties emphasized boosting parliamentary diplomacy, activating parliamentary friendship groups, and updating a 2016 Memorandum of Understanding between Algeria's Council of the Nation and the Indonesian Consultative Assembly. They concluded by stressing the importance of continued efforts to translate their historical bond into more diverse and effective cooperation, along with political, diplomatic, and parliamentary coordination that reflects the strength of their relations.
