Riyad Mahrez Joins Al-Shamal, Targets AFC Champions League Elite

Algerian international Riyad Mahrez is set to embark on a new chapter in his career, joining Qatari side Al-Shamal SC. The move, initially reported by Algerian outlet DZfoot and corroborated by Qatari platform Winwin, sees the winger agree to terms for an initial one-year contract, with an option for an additional season. Mahrez, who became a free agent after his departure from Saudi Arabia's Al-Ahli last June, is scheduled to undergo medical assessments early next week to finalize the transfer.

Mahrez's decision to join Al-Shamal SC reportedly came after careful consideration of offers from English and MLS clubs, as well as rival teams within the league. His priority was to secure a central role in both domestic fixtures and the prestigious AFC Champions League Elite. Al-Shamal SC is participating in this continental competition, allowing Mahrez to continue competing on Asia's premier football stage, a key factor in his choice. His arrival is anticipated to provide an immediate attacking impetus as the Qatari club aims for success in both its domestic challenge and continental campaign.

The transfer also marks a reunion for Mahrez with long-time international strike partner Baghdad Bounedjah, forming a potent attacking duo for Al-Shamal. Mahrez brings with him significant experience and an impressive track record from his three seasons with Al-Ahli, where he contributed 37 goals and 46 assists in 122 appearances and helped the team secure the AFC Champions League Elite title. His veteran presence and extensive elite experience are expected to be pivotal in advancing Al-Shamal deeper into Asian football's flagship competition. The club is also expected to face Al-Ahli on November 23 in the AFC Champions League Elite, a fixture that will see Mahrez play against his former team.
