New Port Measures Cut Vehicle Import Processing Time

New provisions have been implemented within Algerian ports to reduce processing delays for imported vehicles. These measures specifically address challenges faced by vehicles transported from China, where documentation issues have been frequently observed. The Direction de la marine marchande et des ports, operating under the Ministry of Interior and Transport, has issued a directive to maritime agents to manage these situations more effectively.

Previously, difficulties arose from incorrect information in transport and shipping documents, often concerning the identity of beneficiaries or specific vehicle data. Such errors led to additional delays in customs clearance operations, with the supplementary costs typically borne by the importing citizens. The Directorate noted that frequent discrepancies were found in shipping documents upon the arrival of vehicles in Algerian ports.

Under the new dispositions, any additional charges resulting from delays caused by documentation errors will now be assigned to the party responsible for the original mistake. If errors are attributable to the transporter, consortium, or their Algerian representatives—including maritime or unloading agents—these parties will be liable for the supplementary costs incurred due to port delays. Maritime agents are tasked with ensuring the application of these provisions and adhering to the rules stipulated in executive decree 340-20, which governs maritime transport support activities. Non-compliance could lead to administrative measures and sanctions in accordance with current regulations.
