New York (United Nations) – The Palestinian delegation to the United Nations has circulated an amended draft resolution to UN General Assembly members, demanding that Israel end its illegal occupation of Palestinian territories within 12 months of the resolution’s adoption. This development was reported by various media outlets on Thursday.

The resolution, set for a vote on September 18, calls on all states to comply with their obligations under international law, referencing the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice (ICJ). The Palestinian proposal also suggests the creation of an international mechanism to compensate for damages, losses, and injuries caused by Israel’s actions in the occupied Palestinian territories.

The draft further outlines plans for a conference of the High Contracting Parties to the Fourth Geneva Convention, aiming to enforce the convention’s provisions in the occupied Palestinian territories. Additionally, it proposes holding an international conference during the UN General Assembly’s 79th session to implement relevant international decisions on the Palestine issue.

A vote on the resolution is expected during the UN General Assembly’s tenth session next Wednesday.

Earlier this week, the Arab Group, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the Non-Aligned Movement urged the UN General Assembly to vote on the Palestinian resolution. This resolution seeks to compel Israel to end its illegal occupation of Palestinian territories within six months.

The primary objective of the resolution, drafted by the State of Palestine, is to reaffirm the ICJ’s advisory opinion issued on July 19. The ICJ declared that Israel’s presence in the occupied Palestinian territories is illegal and must be ended, including all related illegal settlements and apartheid practices. The ruling emphasized that all states, organizations, the UN, and the Security Council must neither support nor recognize Israel’s illegal presence in these territories.
