Banque Extérieure d’Algérie Enters Africa’s Top 10 Banks for 2026

Banque Extérieure d’Algérie (BEA) has been ranked 10th among the top 100 banks in Africa for 2026, according to a recent assessment by "African Business" magazine. This significant placement distinguishes BEA as the sole Algerian banking institution within the top 10 on the continent. The ranking, titled "Africa’s Top 100 Banks 2026: the full list and our analysis," reported BEA's Tier 1 capital at nearly 3.8 billion dollars.
The "African Business" ranking is determined by the volume of Tier 1 capital, which encompasses a bank’s core capital, reserves, and retained earnings, with financial data standardized to US dollars for comparative analysis across countries. Beyond BEA's top 10 entry, Banque Nationale d’Algérie (BNA) also demonstrated a strong performance, ranking 11th, immediately following BEA. This indicates Algeria's prominent standing, as the nation was among only four countries to dominate the top 14 positions in the overall list.
The broader African banking sector has seen a period of growth, with the total Tier 1 capital for the top 100 African banks increasing by 23% to 155 billion dollars in 2026, up from 126.1 billion dollars in the 2025 ranking. Total assets also grew by 16% to approximately 1.8 trillion dollars. This continental enhancement was attributed to improved exchange rates, stronger economic growth, lower inflation, and heightened bank profitability. The advanced presence of Banque Extérieure d’Algérie, alongside Banque Nationale d’Algérie, underscores the strength and resilience of the Algerian banking sector amidst this positive regional trend.
