Brussels Seeks Enhanced Algeria Economic Partnership

The European Union's Ambassador to Algeria, Diego Meado Pasqua, affirmed Brussels' objective for greater integration with Algeria, underscoring the strategic depth of their partnership. He noted that the unified presence of the European Union at the "NAPAC 2026" conference for the first time demonstrated this commitment. Pasqua highlighted that Algeria is now recognized as a reliable, robust, and essential hub for European energy security, transcending its traditional role as an energy exporter. This evolving status is being solidified amidst global geopolitical shifts, as Europe actively seeks to restructure its partnerships and reduce external dependencies.

Ambassador Pasqua positioned Algeria at the core of Europe's energy and industrial transition strategy. He indicated that Algeria is anticipated to play a pivotal and growing role in renewable energy and green hydrogen sectors, supported by a unique competitive advantage in existing shared infrastructure. This context opens broad prospects for European companies to deepen their investments in the country, thereby enabling Algeria to achieve new regional leadership in the sustainable energy landscape. Europe's pursuit of broader economic and industrial integration with Algeria is based on a full understanding and respect for Algeria's national policies aimed at protecting local industry and achieving economic diversification.

The current focus is on transforming this partnership into a joint strategic lever, achieved by identifying common ground for developing mutually beneficial investment, commercial, and industrial projects that align with both parties' development orientations. This dynamic is built upon continuous institutional dialogue, extending beyond the current partnership agreement toward broader horizons via a "Charter for the Mediterranean." This initiative aims to modernize relations and manage any differences in perspective objectively and transparently. Pasqua stressed that Europe's geographical proximity to Algeria makes it a key partner in economic, commercial, financial, and energy fields, providing a crucial foundation for fostering shared prosperity.

Regarding green hydrogen, the European vision extends beyond mere energy export, focusing primarily on establishing an integrated industrial system within Algeria to serve local uses. Directing renewable energies toward Algerian industry is expected to enhance its competitiveness, while also allowing surplus gas to be redirected for more efficient uses or export. Europe has expressed its readiness to engage in effective investment partnerships to develop this sector, with Ambassador Pasqua emphasizing that the success of this transition requires substantial investments and a comprehensive industrial and regulatory revolution, contingent on "win-win" partnerships that fully respect Algeria's national sovereignty and its future economic and financial choices.
