EU Expresses Understanding of Algeria’s Economic Diversification

The European Union (EU) recognizes and understands Algeria's current economic trajectory, which prioritizes diversification and a reduced reliance on fossil fuels, specifically gas. EU Ambassador to Algeria, Diego Meado, affirmed this policy as legitimate, noting that it aligns with Europe's own initiatives to develop its domestic industries.
This shared understanding fosters an environment for identifying mutual cooperation areas beneficial to both sides. Trade and investment are considered fundamental to the economic relationship between Algeria and the EU. These elements are integral to the existing Partnership Agreement and form a cornerstone of the wider "Charter for the Mediterranean," a framework designed to enhance bilateral relations beyond the scope of the partnership agreement alone. The EU Ambassador underscored the importance of continuously improving economic flows and integration between Europe and Algeria.
While acknowledging potential differing viewpoints on market openness, Ambassador Meado emphasized dialogue as the pathway to reaching common ground. He commended Algeria's initiatives, including the establishment of the Algerian Agency for Investment Promotion and its "single window" system. The ambassador highlighted Europe's strong suitability for significant economic and trade integration with Algeria, citing geographical proximity, established networks, interpersonal connections, and cultural and social ties, all within a framework that respects both Algerian and European sovereignty and shared interests.
