Slimani Presents Algerian Governance Principles at IPU Assembly

Mohamed Larbi Slimani, Vice-President of the Council of the Nation and head of the Algerian parliamentary delegation, presented Algeria's experience in establishing good governance principles within its public policies. Speaking on behalf of the Algerian Parliament at the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (UIP) in Arusha, Tanzania, on Wednesday, Slimani underscored that Algeria, under President Abdelmadjid Tebboune's leadership, has fostered complete trust between its citizens and state institutions through free and fair elections.

The state actively ensures that Algerian citizens can directly observe the quality of institutional performance through their elected representatives in Parliament and local assemblies. This approach embodies a model of participatory democracy where decisions are shaped by shared management and collective conviction. Algeria's institutional framework also incorporates initiatives to enhance popular participation, including the creation of spaces for proposals and follow-up that engage all segments of society, such as the National Observatory of Civil Society, the Supreme Council for Youth, and the Mediator of the Republic body. Furthermore, both chambers of the Parliament have ratified pioneering laws aimed at integrating youth into political life, a measure that resulted in a substantial youth presence in the Lower House during recent legislative elections and the historic election of a woman as Speaker of the Lower House for the first time.

On the international front, Slimani called for broadening the parliamentary perspective of equal opportunities to encompass all peoples. He advocated for combating selectivity in addressing critical global issues and activating sanctions against states that fuel discord, finance crises, and export harmful influences. He also emphasized that good governance necessitates an end to the Palestinian tragedy through the establishment of an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital, and accelerating the decolonization of Western Sahara by granting its people the right to self-determination.
