Zineb Ouannes Unveils New Fantasy Series at SILA 2026

Algerian author Zineb Ouannes will present her new fantasy series, "Bab El Mahroussa et les clés emprisonnées," at the 29th International Book Fair of Algiers (SILA 2026). Scheduled from October 28 to November 7, 2026, at the Palais des Expositions des Pins Maritimes, the launch by Khayel éditions introduces a literary work that blends adventure, legend, and storytelling. This series aims to transport readers into an Algiers where the imaginary intertwines with reality, distinguishing itself by its deep roots in Algerian cultural heritage.

The narrative of "Bab El Mahroussa et les clés emprisonnées" draws directly from Algerian memory, music, and the historic Casbah of Algiers, positioning the city as a primary setting rather than a detached fantastical universe. Ouannes' writing style incorporates a unique blend of classical Arabic and Algerian Darija, with an Algeroise tonality and a rhythm inspired by the language of the Casbah. The series engages readers through popular riddles and enigmas, where keys and gates hold symbolic significance beyond their literal functions, becoming central to a quest.

The inaugural volume, "L'Élu," embarks on a journey following Slimane Srir, a young Algerian from the Casbah, and Krishma Chakour, an Indian student in Algiers. Their relationship explores a rich cultural exchange before a separation sets Slimane on a quest to save Krishma from a "mirror spell." This adventure necessitates Slimane's travel across several countries, including Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Iraq, and India, in search of seven keys. Through this expansive narrative, the series maintains a strong Algerian foundation while fostering dialogue among diverse traditions and cultural spaces.
