7,000 Adults Enroll in Algeria’s New Literacy Programs

Seven thousand adult learners, encompassing both men and women, have joined literacy programs across 374 educational classes in Algeria. These classes, which include 38 newly opened sections, are managed by the National Bureau for Combating Illiteracy and Adult Education annex in Tlemcen province. The registrations for these programs commenced on September 1st, reflecting a national effort to expand educational opportunities.
Approximately 350 contracted agents are tasked with facilitating literacy instruction across 53 municipalities, with an additional 30 teachers assigned to psycho-pedagogical institutions, nursing homes, and rehabilitation centers. The program also saw the deployment of facilitators in three of four municipalities in El Aricha province. A unified introductory lesson focused on 'School Health and Preserving Plant and Forest Cover in Algeria,' aimed at fostering a culture of hygiene, health, prevention, and environmental awareness, with contributions from Civil Protection, medical professionals, gendarmerie, and reintegration officials.
Participants in these two-year, three-level programs work towards the Basic Education Certificate, which is equivalent to a primary education certificate. This qualification enables learners to pursue further educational pathways, including enrollment in distance learning for the first year of middle school or vocational training centers. The Tlemcen annex supports this progression by establishing dedicated support classes throughout the province to aid professional and educational integration. The National Bureau continues to accept new registrations for the literacy classes until December 17, 2026.
