NAPEC 2026 Highlights 15 Algerian University Energy Projects

The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research participated in the 14th NAPEC 2026 exhibition and conference for Energy and Hydrogen in Africa and the Mediterranean basin, which concluded in Oran. The Ministry presented 15 innovative energy projects developed by 11 university and research institutions, showcasing technological solutions. These initiatives aim to support energy solutions within Algeria, including advancements in hydrogen production.
Hicham Cherfi, Deputy Director of Innovation and Technology Monitoring, highlighted that the sector's involvement aimed to exhibit technological solutions applicable across various energy fields. These areas include solar energy production, oil extraction processes, and methods for reducing carbon emissions in ammonia production. This engagement reflects a strategic orientation of scientific research towards developing practical solutions for economic sectors, reinforcing the link between academic institutions and the wider economy.
The presented projects are largely from economic branches affiliated with the higher education sector, acting as a conduit for translating research and innovations into economically valuable products and services. The Ministry's data indicates a growing system for valorizing research and innovation, encompassing 1,963 patent applications and 465 valorizable projects. This system also includes 421 research projects with social and economic impact, alongside 295 subsidiary companies focused on research and development.
Working sessions were conducted during NAPEC 2026 between university and research institutions and entities from the Sonatrach group and other economic enterprises. These sessions focused on exploring partnership opportunities and enabling the transfer of technological solutions and renewable energy innovations from academic environments to industrial application. A notable example of research valorization was the listing of "CRAPC Expertise," a subsidiary economic entity, on the Algiers Stock Exchange, becoming the first such institution from a national scientific research body to enter the Algerian financial market, with its subscription coverage reaching 104.55 percent. The Ministry affirmed this step contributes to positioning universities and research centers as economic contributors capable of wealth creation and developing high-value solutions.
