Chlef University Launches Nation’s First Smart Digital Library

Hassiba Ben Bouali University in Chlef has launched Algeria's first "smart library" digital platform, marking a significant national development. This innovative initiative integrates advanced artificial intelligence technologies, aiming to redefine access to documentary resources for students and researchers while reaffirming the central role of books within the academic environment. The official launch of this "smart library" took place on Monday at the university's Ouled Fares campus.
Dr. Larbi Ghouini, Rector of the university, stated that this project represents a major milestone in the institution's digital transition. The platform was developed by local engineers in collaboration with Abdelkader Metalis, an artificial intelligence expert based in Germany, aligning with presidential directives to engage Algerian expertise from the diaspora. The system currently features approximately 2,000 digitized documents, including a collection of books and doctoral theses.
Amina Riabi, the principal library engineer, elaborated on the platform's advanced functionalities, which leverage AI to go beyond traditional bibliographic research. These include precise extraction of works, translation of search queries, text verification, and automatic generation of summaries and keywords. Yasmina Kherbache, director of the central library, confirmed that the digitization process, which began with 1,700 documents, will continue, prioritizing high-demand materials and unique copies requiring preservation.
This technological leap has also garnered economic attention. Ahmed Heftari, Director General of the financial investment company at Alger 3 University, has expressed interest in exploring investment opportunities associated with the project to bolster its sustainability and operational mechanisms. Access to these advanced digital services will be provided through individual user accounts, subject to symbolic contributions.
