Non-Muslim Worship Freedom Reaffirmed, Misinformation Warning Issued

The Algerian Ministry of Religious Affairs and Wakfs has reaffirmed the constitutional guarantees for non-Muslim religious freedom, concurrently issuing a warning against the propagation of false information circulating online. This dual statement follows a meeting of the National Commission for Religious Rites for Non-Muslims, held at the Ministry's headquarters under the presidency of Minister Youcef Belmehdi on October 13, 2026.

During the commission's meeting, discussions addressed various concerns raised by non-Muslim religious associations. The Ministry underscored that the Algerian Constitution upholds the freedom to practice religions, guaranteeing it in adherence to existing laws and regulations. This constitutional commitment is further aligned with the principles outlined in international charters and treaties, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Additionally, the Ministry highlighted the state's role in safeguarding places of worship from any political or ideological influences.

The National Commission for Religious Rites for Non-Muslims emphasized Algeria's effective commitment to preserving the principle of freedom of belief and implementing mechanisms to regulate the exercise of religious rites. The commission reiterated its consistent willingness to actively engage with and resolve any concerns presented on this matter. It specifically urged the public not to be misled by unreliable or inaccurate information concerning religious practice in Algeria, identifying such content as inappropriately disseminated in the digital sphere.
