Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline Studies Finalized, Algeria Starts Construction

Algeria has finalized all essential studies for the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP) project and initiated construction on its domestic section, marking a pivotal advancement for this strategic energy initiative. The development was confirmed by Minister of Hydrocarbons Mohamed Arkab during the 25th World Energy Congress held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This significant undertaking aims to establish a direct link between Nigerian gas fields and European markets, traversing through Niger and Algeria, thereby potentially increasing gas supply to the continent.
The ambitious 4,128-kilometer pipeline is designed to deliver an initial 20 billion cubic meters of gas to the European Union in its first phase, with projections to expand capacity to 30 billion cubic meters during its second phase. The Algerian segment of the TSGP will follow the existing corridor of the Trans-Saharan Road, extending from the Algerian-Nigerien border to the National Gas Dispatching Center (CNDG) in Hassi R'mel. Its route has been strategically optimized to align with major existing infrastructure, including road networks and operational gas pipelines, to leverage logistical and technical synergies. From the critical Hassi R'mel gas hub, the TSGP will integrate seamlessly with Algeria's national gas transport network and its currently operational export infrastructure.
The Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline project is a collaborative effort involving the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC), the Société Nigérienne des Produits Pétroliers (SONIDEP), and Sonatrach. This continental and international project is recognized as a flagship initiative under the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD), standing as one of its three major structuring projects alongside the Algiers-Lagos Trans-Saharan Road and the Nigeria-Algeria fiber optic link. Its realization underscores Algeria's commitment to strengthening regional integration, maximizing the value of African energy resources, and fostering sustainable economic development across the continent.
Furthermore, the TSGP reflects Algeria's dedication to solidifying strategic partnerships with fellow African nations and promoting South-South cooperation. The project also reinforces Sonatrach's prominent presence within the continental energy sector, demonstrating Algeria's active role in shaping Africa's energy future and ensuring reliable energy supply for international markets. The official launch of construction for the Algerian section of the project took place last June in Aoulef, Adrar Province, attended by Minister Arkab, alongside Nigerian and Nigerien counterparts.
