Banana Prices Return to Accessible Levels in Algeria

Banana prices in Algeria have seen a notable return to more accessible levels, providing relief for consumers after a period of significant increases. Previously, the fruit had reached prices as high as 2,000 Algerian Dinars per kilogram, becoming a luxury item in many markets. Following its progressive return to stalls, bananas are now expected to be sold between 450 and 500 Dinars per kilogram across the country.

This significant reduction in cost is largely attributed to the importation and introduction of substantial quantities of bananas into the market. Trade services have also strengthened their monitoring of supply chains to ensure availability and prevent future shortages. For instance, in Annaba, the price of bananas has fallen to between 410 and 440 Dinars per kilogram, while in Oran, retail prices are around 410 Dinars per kilogram following the reappearance of large volumes in wholesale markets.

Tahar Boulanouar, President of the National Association of Algerian Traders (ANCA), confirmed that new arrivals are progressively ensuring the fruit's availability in retail points, thereby averting potential shortages. He indicated that tons of bananas imported from Costa Rica are actively supplying wholesale markets in Algiers, such as the Eucalyptus market. This strategic influx is not only stabilizing banana prices but is also anticipated to positively influence the prices of seasonal fruits, which are expected to decrease as a result.
