Electoral Integrity Ensured in Local Candidacy Process

The wilaya delegations of Algeria's National Independent Election Authority (ANIE) have finalized their study of electoral lists across 69 wilayas, in preparation for the upcoming local elections. This comprehensive process, completed in less than the legally allotted ten days, resulted in the rejection of numerous candidacies, primarily to ensure the integrity of the electoral process and uphold ethical standards in political life.
The rejections were predominantly based on Article 184 of the Organic Law on Elections, which addresses candidates' connections to suspicious circles or corrupt financial practices, and Article 1, aimed at fostering ethical political conduct. The ANIE delegations meticulously examined 5,631 candidate lists for municipal popular assemblies and 434 electoral lists for wilaya popular assemblies. This included a total of 141,383 candidates for municipal assemblies and 21,476 candidates for wilaya assemblies, with notifications subsequently issued to involved parties, independent lists, and political alliances.
This rigorous screening process demonstrates a strong commitment to transparent and fair elections. Candidates whose files were rejected maintain the right to appeal these decisions to administrative courts, a two-tiered legal recourse, to confirm their eligibility or to be replaced if appeals are unsuccessful. The widespread application of these integrity measures, which affected candidates across various political affiliations in different wilayas, reinforces the nation's dedication to ensuring a credible and ethical electoral landscape.
