Algeria Acquires Two World-First Medical Evacuation Aircraft

Algeria is preparing to deploy two medicalized Cessna SkyCourier aircraft, a development that marks a global first for this specific configuration dedicated to sanitary evacuations. These twin-turboprop utility planes, manufactured by the American company Textron Aviation, are being acquired by Tassili Travail Aérien (TTA), a subsidiary of the national energy group Sonatrach. The acquisition is set to enhance Algeria's emergency medical services and overall health infrastructure, with effective delivery anticipated before the end of October 2026.

The order, first announced at the Bourget International Aeronautics and Space Show in June 2025, follows the technical reception of the aircraft in the United States. This initiative is seen by the US Embassy in Algeria as a step towards strengthening commercial and technological relations between the two countries. Once delivered, the medicalized aircraft will be strategically based in Algiers, the capital, and Hassi Messaoud, a vital hub for the national oil industry. This dual deployment aims to address both the general needs of the territory and the specific requirements of the energy sector.

The Cessna SkyCourier aircraft are recognized for their versatility, robustness, and ability to operate from short or minimally prepared runways, making them suitable for accessing remote regions, including Algeria's Grand South. Equipped with the advanced LifePort PLUS Powered Medevac system, these planes can quickly reconfigure for specialized sanitary evacuations, transitioning efficiently from passenger or cargo transport. Their primary mission involves providing rapid medicalized transport and urgent patient evacuation, thereby reducing transfer times from isolated areas to specialized healthcare facilities. Additionally, the aircraft will support the transport of energy sector personnel and execute special missions for Sonatrach and its partners, further underscoring their operational flexibility and contribution to national capabilities.
