Minister Badari Guides National AI Program Through 2030

Algeria has initiated a comprehensive national program for Artificial Intelligence (AI) set to extend until 2030. This strategic framework aims to mobilize national financing and unify efforts across various sectors to advance technological development within the country. The initiative underscores a conviction that investing in AI is a strategic commitment to knowledge, human capital, and Algeria's capacity for innovation, fostering an integrated national system built on shared responsibility and concerted efforts.

The Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Kamal Badari, recently chaired a working session with representatives from public and private economic institutions to discuss the implementation of this national AI strategy. Discussions focused on crucial steps such as mobilizing necessary funding, with contributions from both public and private entities, to acquire graphic processing units (GPUs). This acquisition is intended to significantly enhance Algeria's advanced computing capabilities, providing researchers and engineers with the essential technical resources required to develop innovative solutions.

The program also prioritizes the funding of scientific research and national applied projects, directing research efforts to meet the country's economic and technological needs and convert findings into practical, value-added products. Further objectives include bolstering the specialized research center for Artificial Intelligence and data, strengthening its scientific and technical potential to play a central role in advanced research and knowledge production, and ensuring its alignment with global technological advancements.

Additionally, the strategy seeks to attract high-level scientific and technological competencies, both domestically and internationally, including Algerian experts residing abroad, through an attractive special recruitment system. Attendees of the working session agreed to establish a joint framework comprising representatives from economic institutions, the National Committee for the Implementation of the AI Strategy, and relevant public bodies. This framework will be responsible for preparing an executive roadmap through 2030, outlining needs, priorities, funding mechanisms, partner contributions, and a phased implementation timetable with precise indicators for measuring progress and impact, ultimately enhancing Algeria's technological sovereignty and establishing a robust knowledge economy.
