Fifty-One Countries Converge for Algiers Book Fair

The 29th Algiers International Book Fair (SILA) will take place from October 28 to November 7, 2026, under the high patronage of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. Set to be held at the Palais des expositions des Pins maritimes in Algiers, the event will feature the slogan "Between the pages of a book, the future." Mohamed Iguerb, the SILA Commissioner, announced that 51 countries will be represented by 1,567 publishing houses, including 350 Algerian, 554 Arab, and 663 international exhibitors from Africa, Europe, Asia, and the United States of America. The fair is expected to present nearly 300,000 book titles across various genres and host 994 cultural, literary, and intellectual activities with 220 participating writers, drawing growing visitor numbers year after year.

SILA 2026 will introduce a dedicated "History and Memory" space within the "Gourara" pavilion for the first time, offering visitors an immersive experience of Algeria's historical stages through new technologies like 3D projection. The fair will also continue the third edition of the First Book Prize for young authors and launch a new prize to recognize the best Algerian translator. Additionally, all participating publishers will benefit from tax exemptions, and efforts are being made to facilitate access to information and books for all readers, including those in southern Algeria, through the SILA application and website.

The cultural program will feature Saudi Arabia as the guest of honor, a selection that the Saudi Ambassador, Abdallah Ben Nasser Al-Bassiri, highlighted as a testament to the deep fraternal ties and the desire of both countries' leaders to strengthen bilateral cooperation, especially in culture. The fair will include meetings on the National Movement and the Liberation Revolution, commemorating the centenary of the Étoile nord-africaine, and illuminating the legacy of Émir Abdelkader. Prominent literary and intellectual figures, including Syrian poet Adonis, novelist Yasmina Khadra, and historians Benjamin Stora and John Kaiser, are slated to participate. Furthermore, an "Esprit Panaf" space will host conferences on African literature, reinforcing Algeria's commitment to continental cultural exchange and its principles of supporting just causes.
