African Union Honors Algeria for Women’s Economic Empowerment

Algeria has been honored by the African Union with an award recognizing its substantial efforts in promoting women's economic empowerment and financial inclusion. The distinction was presented during the second edition of the "Igumini" dialogue on gender equality and women's empowerment, held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from October 19 to 21, 2026. This prestigious award falls under the pan-African "WYFEI 2030 Accelerator" initiative, which focuses on women and youth financial and economic inclusion.

The recognition highlights Algeria's strong commitment to advancing gender equality and fostering economic development across the African continent. It specifically acknowledges the Algerian authorities' endeavors to support entrepreneurial initiatives and innovation, thereby enhancing women's participation across diverse sectors and strengthening their vital role in national development. This commitment is reflected in the nation's dedication to equal opportunities and empowering women as active contributors to sustainable growth, aligning with the core objectives of the WYFEI 2030 initiative.

The "Igumini" dialogue, during which the award was conferred, served as a continental platform for government officials, African Union Commission representatives, financial institutions, experts, and women entrepreneurs to exchange experiences and identify practical solutions. Discussions centered on expanding women's access to funding, supporting women-led projects, boosting digital financial inclusion, and developing essential digital, financial, and entrepreneurial skills for girls and young women. This broader context underscores the African Union's collective drive to accelerate the implementation of commitments related to women's economic empowerment and their access to markets and investment opportunities, in which Algeria plays a recognized role.
