National Program Targets 2.4 GW Solar by 2027

Algeria plans to add 2.4 gigawatts (GW) of solar energy capacity by 2027, a move aimed at bolstering the country's clean electricity production. This initiative is a component of Algeria's national renewable energy program. Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, Mourad Adjal, outlined these details during a presentation on the sector's performance and priorities to the Finance and Budget Committee of the People's National Assembly, in the context of reviewing the 2027 finance bill.

The scheduled 2.4 GW of solar capacity for 2027 represents the remaining segment of the national renewable energy program's first phase. This initial phase targets a total of 3.2 GW of solar power, distributed across 21 stations located in 14 wilayas, with 760 megawatts already operational. The overarching national program sets an ambitious goal of achieving a total renewable energy production capacity of 15 GW by 2035, encompassing both grid-connected and off-grid projects.

Algeria's energy transition strategy focuses on diversifying production sources, improving energy efficiency, and preserving natural resources. Parallel to the solar expansion, the nation is actively developing clean hydrogen projects, sustainable fuels, and regional electricity interconnections. Significant investments are also allocated to support energy infrastructure and enhance the efficient use of natural resources. The renewable energy program further includes off-grid initiatives, such as electrifying over 2,500 isolated homes and installing solar-powered water pumping systems to support agricultural activities.
