President Tebboune Receives Niger Defense Minister for Partnership Talks

On October 21, Algeria and Niger solidified their defense cooperation by signing a military partnership agreement in Algiers between Chief of Staff Saïd Chengriha and his Nigerien counterpart, Salifou Modi. General Chengriha affirmed the Algerian army's readiness to consider any Nigerien proposals aimed at strengthening bilateral military and security relations, building on previous exchanges. This accord underscores a shared commitment to confronting regional security challenges, with Algeria recognized for its defense expertise and experience in countering armed terrorist groups. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune also received Niger's Minister of State and Minister of Defense, General Salifou Modi, accompanied by senior Algerian officials.
Algeria's commitment to regional security extends to concrete military assistance. In August, the Algerian National People's Army deployed four Sukhoi Su-30 fighter jets, along with a refueling aircraft, to Niger. This deployment, conducted at the request of Nigerien authorities following security events in Niamey, aimed to support the Nigerien army. Such actions reflect the ongoing efforts to develop defense partnerships and enhance political and security coordination on regional issues of mutual concern, including addressing the growing activities of armed groups in the Sahel.
Beyond defense, Algeria has provided significant technical assistance to Niger in the energy sector. Following an incident at the "Goumeri W8" oil well in Niger's Agadem field, Algerian experts from Sonatrach were dispatched to provide technical aid. Arriving on October 14, the team collaborated with local personnel to assess the situation, contain operational risks, and secure the facility before submitting a technical report to the Nigerien authorities. Nigerien President Abdelrahmane Tiani conveyed his gratitude to Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune for Algeria's rapid response and the mobilization of its expertise, highlighting Algeria's status as a leading energy partner in the region and its practical commitment to African solidarity.
