Nigerien President Thanks Algeria for Rapid Oil Well Aid

An uncontrolled oil and gas eruption occurred at the "Goumeri W-8" oil well in Niger's Agadem Basin on September 25, 2026, with crude oil and gas jetting over ten meters high. The incident, which hospitalized two employees but caused no fatalities, led to material damage to the common platform connected to neighboring wells "W-3" and "W-4," threatening adjacent infrastructure. Following initial, partial containment efforts that proved insufficient, authorities in Niamey requested urgent technical assistance from Algeria.

Algeria promptly responded by deploying a high-level technical mission to Niger from October 12 to 19, 2026. This mission comprised experts and officials from the Ministry of Hydrocarbons, the Hydrocarbons Regulatory Authority (ARH), and the Sonatrach Group. The Algerian specialists worked in close coordination with Nigerien Ministers of Petroleum and Environment, assessing the well's condition, implementing emergency protocols, and establishing containment measures. These included erecting barriers, trenches, and retention basins to collect spilled crude, facilitating its recovery and secure transfer, while also monitoring gas emissions and securing the perimeter. The Algerian expertise also supported an independent inquiry commission launched by the Nigerien government.

The rapid and effective intervention by Algeria successfully contained the industrial risks at the Goumeri well, thereby mitigating a potential technical-financial shock to Niger's economy. This assistance was crucial in managing intervention costs, minimizing crude loss, containing pollution, and preventing the risk of prolonged shutdowns for adjacent wells, safeguarding a vital economic artery for Niger. This initiative reflects the deep relations of brotherhood and solidarity that connect Algeria and Niger.

On October 19, Brigadier General Abdourahamane Tiani, President of Niger, received the Algerian experts and officially conveyed his profound thanks to President Abdelmadjid Tebboune for Algeria's immediate responsiveness and the effective deployment of its national expertise. The Nigerien Ministers of Petroleum and Environment also expressed their gratitude to the Algerian Minister of Hydrocarbons, Mohamed Arkab, for this show of solidarity. This collaboration underscores Algeria's commitment to regional cooperation and reinforces its standing as an indispensable energy partner and a guarantor of technical stability in the region by enhancing its neighbor's industrial resilience.
