Hydrocarbon Pact Signed, Expanding Algerian Reach to Bangladesh

Algeria has solidified its reputation as a reliable energy supplier, demonstrating an expansion beyond its traditional markets through a newly signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bangladesh. This agreement, formalized during a visit by a Bangladeshi ministerial delegation led by Minister of Energy, Electricity, and Mineral Resources Iqbal Hassan Mahmud to Algeria, marks a significant step in developing cooperation and partnership in the hydrocarbons sector. The engagement underscores Algeria's growing influence in diverse global energy markets.

The discussions between the two nations centered on advancing commercial cooperation in hydrocarbon supply, specifically addressing Bangladesh's need for crude oil, refined petroleum products, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and liquefied natural gas (LNG). Bangladesh faces an acute energy crisis, intensified by a 50 percent reduction in LNG shipments from the Gulf region due to geopolitical instability and a growing reliance on energy imports. The presence of representatives from Petrobangla, BPC, and its LPG subsidiary during the talks highlights Bangladesh's intent to utilize Algeria as a solution to its substantial energy deficit.

This strategic partnership offers Algeria an opportunity to penetrate new markets, particularly across Asia, where its presence has been steadily increasing. Evidence of this expansion includes a 70 percent rise in Algerian LNG supplies to South Korea. The escalating demand for Algerian gas and oil from non-traditional clients reaffirms confidence in Algeria as a secure and trusted provider of energy resources, positioning it as a preferred alternative for numerous countries amid ongoing regional crises.
