Dhaka Confirms Energy Imports, Broadens Algeria Ties

Bangladesh is set to import Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), and other petroleum products from Algeria. This development follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on October 20 in Algiers, which formally established a framework for enhanced energy cooperation between the two nations. The agreement was signed by Bangladesh's Minister of Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud, and Algeria's Minister of Energy, Mohamed Arkab, with imports specified to proceed on a government-to-government (G2G) basis.
Beyond direct imports, the MoU and subsequent discussions outlined several areas for expanded collaboration in the energy sector. These include plans for developing energy infrastructure within Bangladesh and joint efforts in oil, gas, and coal exploration. Bangladesh also requested Algeria's support in providing training programs for its engineers and technical personnel, seeking to leverage Algerian expertise and technological knowledge to enhance its capabilities. This initiative aims to bolster Bangladesh's energy security by diversifying its sources with supplies from Africa.
The comprehensive discussions extended beyond energy to include a high-level meeting between the Bangladeshi delegation, led by Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud, and Algerian Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb. Both parties emphasized the importance of advancing their bilateral relationship, identifying significant opportunities for cooperation across various sectors such as trade, investment, agriculture, fertilizers, education, science, technology, sports, and culture. The Algerian Prime Minister underscored his government's commitment to strengthening ties with Bangladesh, highlighting the potential for both fraternal nations to complement each other in trade, business, and investment.
Further reinforcing this commitment, the Bangladeshi Energy Minister also held separate meetings with Algeria's Minister of Mines and Mineral Industries, Mourad Hanafi, and Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, Mourad Adjal. These engagements covered various topics of mutual interest, reaffirming the shared objective of deepening cooperation for the benefit of both countries.
