Algiers Prioritizes New Energy Pact with Bangladesh

Algeria and Bangladesh recently formalized a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation in the hydrocarbon sector, a development expected to create new opportunities for Bangladesh to import liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and other petroleum products from Algeria. The agreement, signed in Algiers, establishes a government-to-government mechanism for these imports. According to reports, Algeria’s President specifically directed the prioritization of this MoU in response to Bangladesh's identified energy requirements.

The scope of cooperation extends beyond immediate energy imports, encompassing joint efforts in developing refineries and crucial LNG infrastructure within Bangladesh. The MoU also outlines prospects for both countries to collaborate on the exploration of coal and gas fields in Bangladesh. Further strengthening this energy partnership, the Algerian Petroleum Institute has expressed its interest in providing training and knowledge-sharing programs for Bangladeshi engineers and technical personnel to bolster domestic expertise in the energy sector.

During bilateral discussions between Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf and Bangladesh's State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir, other areas of mutual interest were also addressed. Algeria indicated its willingness to support Bangladesh with fertilizer imports for its agricultural sector. In a reciprocal gesture, the Algerian Foreign Minister sought Bangladesh's experience in revitalizing Algeria's textile industry and conveyed interest in cooperation across pharmaceuticals, leather, and additional textile initiatives. Both officials underscored the significance of regular Foreign Office Consultations and exchanges of high-level visits to further solidify bilateral relations, with the next round of consultations anticipated to take place in Dhaka.
