Algeria Launches National Memory and History Sessions to Preserve National Identity

ALGIERS, October 27, 2026 – Algeria’s Minister of Mujahideen and Rights Holders, Abdelmalek Tacherift, has emphasized the importance of preserving national memory and strengthening the country’s historical identity, describing the National Memory and History Sessions as a strategic initiative to safeguard the nation’s heritage for future generations.

Speaking at the opening ceremony held at the Abdelatif Rahal International Conference Centre in Algiers, the minister called for the development of a comprehensive national strategy aimed at protecting Algeria’s historical legacy and ensuring its transmission to younger generations.

Tacherift stressed that national memory plays a fundamental role in helping nations preserve their history, reinforce national unity and maintain their collective identity. He explained that the primary objective of these sessions is to establish a platform for consultation and dialogue involving government institutions, academic experts, historical organizations and various sectors of society.

According to the minister, discussions surrounding Algeria’s historical memory had previously been largely confined to universities, academic circles and occasional commemorative events. However, he highlighted the growing institutional attention given to this issue under President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who has made the preservation of national memory a priority.

The minister emphasized the need to establish a clear and sustainable framework capable of protecting Algeria’s historical heritage, promoting scientific research and strengthening public awareness of the sacrifices made during the country’s struggle for independence. He also underlined the importance of ensuring that younger generations remain connected to their national history and cultural identity.

Organized under the high patronage of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the National Memory and History Sessions are being held under the theme “Memory of a Nation, History of a People, Future of Generations.”

The opening ceremony brought together government ministers, senior state officials, representatives of national organizations, historical associations and prominent national figures. Veterans of Algeria’s liberation struggle, university professors, historians, researchers and specialists in national memory also attended the event.

The initiative aims to strengthen efforts to document Algeria’s history, preserve historical sites and testimonies, and encourage research into the country’s revolutionary heritage. It also provides an opportunity for participants to exchange expertise, discuss preservation challenges and explore new approaches to historical education.

Through this national gathering, Algeria seeks to establish a broader framework for safeguarding its collective memory, honoring the sacrifices of its independence fighters and ensuring that its historical legacy continues to inspire and educate future generations.
