Goumeri W-8 Oil Well Incident Prompts Algerian Assistance in Niger

Niger's government has engaged Algerian experts in response to an incident at the Goumeri W-8 oil well within the Agadem oil block. Hamadou Tini, Niger's Minister of Petroleum, convened an urgent meeting with his collaborators and Algerian specialists on October 13, 2026, to assess the situation. The discussions are aimed at understanding the incident's progression, evaluating its consequences, and identifying the technical solutions required to halt the eruption.
The incident, which occurred on September 25, 2026, involved crude oil and gas ejecting over ten meters high from the Goumeri W-8 well, operated by CNPC Niger Petroleum S.A., significantly damaging the platform. While teams had partially contained the situation by October 12, full control of the well had not been re-established. Algerian specialists are contributing to the technical analysis, working alongside Nigerien teams who are monitoring the on-site situation. This external expertise is intended to provide reliable technical elements to inform appropriate measures without premature conclusions on the causes, as an independent investigation is ongoing.
Specialized teams are working continuously on the ground to secure the platform, contain spilled oil, and regain control of the well, employing measures such as dykes, trenches, and basins to retain hydrocarbons. Safety protocols, including restricted access, gas monitoring, and fire prevention, are strictly enforced to protect workers, installations, and the environment. The deployment of Algerian expertise highlights regional cooperation in addressing complex energy challenges and underscores Algeria's technical capabilities in critical oilfield operations.
