Hydraulics Minister Bouguerra Oversees Water Resource Optimization Projects

Minister of Hydraulics Lounès Bouguerra recently chaired a coordination meeting focused on national water resource management. The session reviewed ongoing efforts to reuse treated water and advanced preparations for connecting new seawater desalination plants in the wilayas of Tlemcen, Mostaganem, and Chlef. These initiatives are in line with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune's directives, which aim to bolster national water security and maximize the value of available water resources across Algeria.

Regarding the valorisation of treated water, Minister Bouguerra underscored the critical need to enhance coordination among various stakeholders. He emphasized intensifying efforts to increase the recovery rates of used water and expanding the application of treated water, particularly for agricultural irrigation. This strategic approach is expected to contribute significantly to increasing irrigated land, supporting agricultural development, and alleviating pressure on traditional water sources, thereby promoting sustainable water practices.

For the connectivity projects involving new seawater desalination plants, the Minister highlighted their strategic importance. He stressed the imperative to allocate the necessary material and human resources to ensure these projects commence within their stipulated timelines. These developments are crucial for securing the supply of potable water to citizens in several wilayas and guaranteeing the continuous provision of public water services, which is vital for community well-being and stability.

Concluding the meeting, Minister Bouguerra reaffirmed the necessity of continuous oversight for both treated water reuse and desalination initiatives. He called for strengthened effective coordination among all relevant bodies to ensure the successful achievement of planned objectives. These concerted efforts are designed to solidify national water security and uphold the sustainability of public water services throughout Algeria.
