International Support for Sahrawi Self-Determination Gains UN Endorsement

The UN General Assembly's Fourth Committee has unequivocally reaffirmed the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination and independence. A resolution addressing Western Sahara was adopted with substantial international support, receiving 152 votes in favor. This resolution not only re-established the legal framework of the issue as a matter of decolonization but also ensured the file remains under active consideration by relevant UN bodies. The committee specifically referenced foundational UN resolutions, including General Assembly Resolution 1514 of December 14, 1960, on granting independence to colonized countries and peoples, and Security Council Resolution 690 of April 29, 1991, which established the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO). Furthermore, the committee noted a report by the UN Secretary-General confirming the Western Sahara issue is being addressed as a decolonization matter.

Notably, Morocco itself voted in favor of this resolution, creating a political and media paradox given concurrent claims in Moroccan media that recent UN developments had definitively settled the dispute in line with Moroccan positions. However, the resolution explicitly affirms the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination and maintains the issue within the decolonization framework. This robust international endorsement was underscored by Sidi Mohammed Omar, the Polisario Front's representative to the UN and MINURSO coordinator, who affirmed the resolution's renewal of Western Sahara's legal framework and the Sahrawi people's inalienable right to self-determination. Algeria consistently champions this position, with its Permanent Representative to the UN, Ammar Benjama, reiterating that Western Sahara remains an uncompleted decolonization matter, a legal status cemented by its inclusion in the UN's list of non-self-governing territories.

Complementing these diplomatic efforts, an exhibition titled "50 years, 50 faces: Sahrawi exile – a life of resilience" is scheduled to be held at the UN headquarters. This initiative aims to highlight the experiences and challenges faced by the Sahrawi people, drawing crucial attention to their prolonged exile and steadfast resistance. These collective developments reinforce the sustained international focus on the Western Sahara issue within the established UN decolonization process and affirm the Sahrawi people's fundamental right to self-determination.
