National Environmental Journalism Competition Promotes Climate Awareness

The sixth edition of Algeria's National Environmental Journalism Competition has been launched, with its organizer, Lamine Mehnane, affirming its role in encouraging journalists to focus on environmental issues. The competition aims to contribute to establishing a robust culture of environmental protection within the country, specifically highlighting efforts to rehabilitate forests damaged by fires and restore their ecological balance. This initiative underscores a commitment to promoting climate awareness through specialized media contributions.

According to Mehnane, environmental journalism and interest in climate issues in Algeria have seen significant development in recent years. This progress is attributed to the high quality of journalistic works submitted in previous editions of the competition. Mehnane stressed the importance of continuously supporting specialized environmental writing and enhancing the media's crucial role in disseminating environmental awareness. He noted that covering forest fires should extend beyond merely reporting damages and losses, encompassing the follow-up on rehabilitation processes, restoration of forest cover, and re-establishment of animal wealth and ecological balance within affected ecosystems.

The competition is open to journalists employed across various media platforms, including written press, electronic journalism, television, and radio, encompassing four distinct categories. Participating journalistic works must have been published by an accredited Algerian media outlet between January 1 and December 5, 2026. To incentivize high-quality submissions, the second-place prize is set at 100,000 Algerian Dinars, with the first-place award offering an even higher sum. These efforts are designed to motivate journalists to produce impactful work that furthers environmental journalism and raises awareness about safeguarding natural resources.
